Shooting Challenge Pets Gallery 4

After only recently buying my "nifty fifty", and never having entered a shooting challenge before, I decided that this was the perfect time to give it a whirl. While Poppy (pictured) sat looking mesmerized at the heavy rain outside, I grabbed my camera and started snapping. This is one of many taken, originally taken in colour, however in post-processing I decided black & white gave a more dramatic feel to the photo.

This is my Boston Terrier, Bobo. She's almost 13 years old and blind in one eye.

I saw her laying down near a window in the morning with the light hitting her in a perfect way, so I decided to take some shots at different angles (about 10 in all), and this is the best of those.

Taken with my old Canon EOS with the standard 15-85mm lens, ISO 400, f16 w/ 1/25 exposure. This is all NATURAL LIGHT. -Alex Shapiro

Here lays Bert, a very tired three and a half month old Vizsla-mix puppy after playing for several hours with three other dogs in the hot Chicago summer sun. You can see that portions of his face are dark brown and black—that's from the other dogs kicking up dirt onto his face while he stood behind them while the dug, confused as to what they were doing. Needless to say half an hour after taking this shot he popped right back up and was zooming around again playing for a few more hours!

I try for ground level or below-Bert level angles when taking pictures of him, as I feel it more accurately shows not only his size in relation to the world around him, but also what he's experiencing in his very young life. -Andy Shapero

Here's a shot of my boy, Moon. We took him swimming in the creek this week - his first intro to the water. He was clearly right at home. My wife snapped the photo and I glammed it up a little in Photoshop with a difused background. Nothing fancy - just a lab in the creek... -Bert Laws

This is my dog Missy, she's a 5 year old Rednose American Staffordshire (pitbull) and she's a big sweetheart. The expressions I get like this are what so many people don't see in the public media. She's an amazing dog with a very kind demeanor, I have had several different breeds and this one has been my favorite of them all. I had several cute pictures though she is always following me around and watching what I do so we just went out for a walk and I snagged this gem! Hope you like it. -Brandon Meador

This is my dog, Dio. He is a 4 year old, red-brindle greyhound that I rescued through Greyhound Pets of America. His racing name was ‘Burst of Fire' which was shortened to ‘Fire' at the kennel. Since we live in a condo, I didn't think it would be wise to yell ‘FIRE' when I wanted his attention, so I renamed him Dio in honor of rock legend Ronnie James.

After an illustrious 122 career races (he won 12), Dio now prefers to nap 23.5 hours every day; except when I wake him up to take his picture. He's nearly 6-feet long from nose to tail so I tried to capture an interesting pose while keeping all 4 legs in frame. -Brian Poulsen

My wife and I have a contest of our own in our house since we both have iPhones. Who can take the best photo of our two cats, Chloe and Petey. This lil girls name is Chloe. She has a very frisky personality. My wife caught this shot of her while she was on the back of our couch in mid afternoon nap mode. I woke her up trying to get a good photo of her cute face sleeping and she just opened up her mouth with a big ol' yawn! Enjoy! -Calvin Waddy

Photo taken today while Cassius was sleeping, he decided to wake up a little to pose, but not much effort. I was going to try and get some good cat in motion photos but it seems lying down is order of the day.

I've been trying to take pictures of our dog for the past few days. The flash and the shutter opening and closing scared him. I finally caught him earlier today sleeping on one of our love seats. After about 40 pictures of him sleeping, he woke up. My submission was actually the very last photo I shot. He didn't blink and didn't run away. His name is Red. I believe that he is the weeniest pit bull I've ever met. Honestly, who gets scared of a camera shutter? Haha. -David Burnside

Basically I was taking some practice shots in my moms garden. (practice makes perfect) and I came across my cat Newman Chilling on some patio stones, I snapped a few pictures and even though it was hard to select which one to submit, I think i liked this one the best over all. I believe it is framed fairly well, and Im actually considering making this a poster!! :) For a guy who just got his first camera, I recommend Photography to anyone curious to try, The results can be very rewarding. -David Kertesz

This is my 6 month old rescue mix. She's been sick, and this is the first time in over a week she's felt like going out to play. I just let her run around and sat and watched. My sister asked me to shoot some of her Senior photos out at the barn (she's a competitive horseback rider), and I happily jumped at the chance to practice some portrait photography. Her horse, Chagall, is beautiful, but early on in the shoot a horsefly began pester him. Chagall went NUTS and started to buck and kick. Luckily my sister wasn't on him, and we calmed him down before someone got hurt. I took this shot just as he began to settle down. -Drew Skrainka

"Doudz, the Circus Cat"

Our cat is insane. She's pretty much fearless and loves to jump on the balcony ramp, literally hanging from a ledge, which totally freaks us out.

ISO 2000 might sound weird and rightly so... I had forgotten to change the setting from a night shoot a few days earlier, I changed it afterwards but couldn't get a better shot, plus it started raining, the light got terrible, so ISO 2000 it is. -Ian Lee

Simply enough, my pets tend to sit still, and unless there is a flash, they don't care much.

The sun was nice, he (male Whippet named Twister) was in his usual napping spot with a nice sunbeam.

I have no ISO or exposure settings since I used my EVO 8MP…had loaned my Point and Shoot to friends for SCUBA diving.

He looks peaceful, the bloom from the sunbeam turned out nicely, and just looking at the picture makes me want a nap. -Jeff Kaiser

Story: Meow's been getting more spoiled since my parents are around. He's been fed more often (while I'm at work) and his favorite napping spot is the most expensive couch in the house. He loves to scrunch up in the corners rather than laying out in the open, and sometimes ends up flipping over to get comfy. He always seems to know when the camera's on him though, so he'll have an eye open as if to ask why I'm disturbing his beauty sleep! -Jeffrey Kuo

I took this photo of my Rottweiler last night as he was falling asleep. He's very rarely holding still, making this a special moment. He had been groomed just hours before, so I wanted to capture the texture, sheen, and rich hues of his dual-toned fur. I like that his eye and whiskers are subtle, leaving the texture at center stage. Shot with my Nikon D80, Micro 105mm lens. I altered the color a bit afterwards. -Jessica Bell

I was walking my gf's dog, Sierra and trying to get her to sit still long enough to get a shot. I'd tell her to sit, but as soon as I would bend down to try to snap a pic, she would run over and try to lick my face. finally she stopped and looked when some sort of army helicopter flew by. she looks almost sad in this photo. took the pic with my iphone4 and adjusted the saturation slightly in photoshop. -Jim Welch

I don't have a pet but it seems like everyone in my neighbourhood does so on an evening stroll with my friend and her kids, we came cross this very adorable dog. in true love triangle fashion, she was oblivious to the little 2-year-old in the background who wanted to pet him while she posed and hammed it up for my camera while i was crouched down on the cement trying to capture both dog & child. this photo is taken with canon t2i 50mm lens at aperture 4.0 with shutter speed 1/60 and ISO 100 -Joanna Law

While visiting my Mom, her dog was waiting for her to come home by sitting in her chair with her knitting supplies. When I went to take a quick picture of Booda, her dog, he looked away. He is afraid of his own reflection (literally) and probably looked away because he saw himself in the lens. It captures his shyness better than a more conventional photo. -Joseph Pereira

I woke up and saw my brother's little kitten staring at me thorough the curtains. In stare down mode, I kept looking at him and grabbed my phone and snapped the picture before he ran off.

Note to gizmodo: I have not taken this photo during the week of the contest, I am out of the country till the 1st and not anywhere near my pets. I really wanted to enter this contest, so eventhough I understand that this will not qualify for the contest, I hope you can at least take my submission and have a laugh at the absurdity of this picture. -Josh Ash

Attached is a portrait of my furry baby, Caligula. He was an evil kitten, hence the name, but he also walks around with an undeserved sense of accomplishment and poise, so it works both ways. He's a natural poser, the trick is to get him in good lighting and to look somewhere near the camera. He loves looking out the window, so natural light works best. To get him to stop looking out the window and to turn more or less in my direction I use a feather-wand toy. Sometimes i dangle it right above the lens, but then he accidentally swipes the lens, so off to the side is best. I used a Canon Digital Rebel XT, 50mm 1.4 USM lens, 400 ISO, 2.8 aperture, and slightly overexposed the right half of the frame. To accentuate the overexposure I added a glow filter, gives it a nice dreamy effect that I love. I use Aperture and NikColor Efex Pro. Oh and he was an evil kitten because when you ignored him he would claw his way up your leg and back until he reached your shoulder, ruining many pairs of jeans and shirts in the process. He's too fat now to do that, 14 lbs., but he would if he could! Evil. Love him to death though. -Karina Perez

I was reading about this weeks shooting challenge this morning and looked up to see my rescue dog Shadoe perched on the edge of the couch like she was praying. I changed my Motorola Droid to camera mode and shot the photo in auto with the 5 MP camera on my phone! I thought it was cool that the sun coming through the window appeared like a halo on her head, but to my surprise the angle of the camera cast prisms of light from the sun coming in the window. What do you think? Was that a refraction? Or was Shadoe really praying and she was getting an answer?? -Karen Greene

My wife showed me the photo she had taken of our dog Shadoe that she was entering into the contest then went down to get some laundry started. I went in to see Shadoe perched on the couch and was surprised to find my bird dog posing over her for his own contest photo. They were both staring into the yard at a couple morning doves that had landed on the fence. I picked up my wife's Motorola Droid and shot this 'double take'. I was thinking about how sad it was that this week's challenge was pets since I haven't had a pet in years, but when I was out taking other pictures I saw this guy chillin under an SUV. This cat looks almost exactly like my old neighbor's cat Ricky, and posed much like my old cats so I figured close enough. -Peter Duff

Its a shot of my dog Jack yawning. Shot it with an old Canon 1Ds Mark 2 and a 24-70 EF lens at f11, 1/60th. I always liked Chuck Close's epic portraits he did in the 70s so I wanted to try some thing like that. I shot him against the wall of my apt which is painted black with a few cards blocking the light to give it a pure black. I had him lie on the ground with the camera on the floor looking slightly upwards. For lighting I used a Chinese made 1200w ring flash on one side and a large white card on the other its about a foot away so the bounce was substantial. My dog is very well trained from a young age so it was easy to get him to sit in one spot until the opportune moment arrives. Hope I make the cut. Cheers. -Peter Le

This shot is of my bichon, named Sammy. He is about five years old. I took this shot using my new Nikon D3000 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens, at ISO 800 and shutter speed of 1/1250 sec. Sammy loves to play with almost any type of ball, and I knew could get a great shot if I had good enough lighting to use a fast shutter speed, so I took him and Cooper, the other dog in the picture, outside and spent a good half hour tossing the ball and trying to get the perfect composition. In the end, this picture of him not actually playing is my absolute favorite. -Rachel Weiss

This is our 1-year-old dog, Beasley. She is half a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the other half seems to be Jack Russel. When I saw this assignment, I instantly thought of Olan Mills as a portrait for my dog. I shot these photos with a canon 40d, 16-35mm f/2.8. I used a reflective umbrella with a Speedlite 580 and triggered with a cactus wizard. I have a black cloth and laid it on my guest bed for the seamless black backdrop. In post, I combined the two photographs together and I made the photo look 70's-ish in PhotoShop. -Randy Metcalf

This is my four month old Wheaten Terrier puppy, Roux. That's the third stuffed duck he's gone through in two months. And that his look daring you to try and steal his ducky away from him. I took him outside with some toys and starting clicking away. I had a friend keep his attention so I could take the pictures (and so he wouldn't lick my camera).

I used my Nikon D40 with a AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II lens. This will sound pretty lame, but I kept everything on automatic. Fiddling with settings while a puppy with a short attention span is waiting to play is a good way to end a photo shoot. -Sarah Thomas

As soon as I saw the challenge for this week, I knew I would be taking it of my girlfriend's dog, Patches. To start, I wasn't sure how I was going to take it. All of a sudden, she brought a bone outside and began chomping away. This was the perfect opportunity. I started snapping shot after shot and chose the one that really brought out her personality of innocence and playfulness. She's such a little princess too. Even the trellis of flowers in the background brings out her femininity. After the permitted photo shoot was over, she flashed a huge smile and was treated to a MilkBone for her cooperation. -Tom Gutowski

This is my girlfriend's cat, shot one day in her bedroom with a Canon Rebel T1i. My girlfriend asked me to play with the cat while she was gone, so I used the opportunity to snap a few pictures. She has this blanket she likes to kneed with her claws and suck on simultaneously. This was the only photo where I could catch her doing both. These were the settings for the camera: -Wade Archilla

"Ren" is a Devon Rex, a strange modern breed of house cat. We have two. The first looks somewhat normal, but this one looks ridiculous.

This was taken on my HTC Incredible and contrast/brightness changed a bit in photoshop. My pup Wally is an attention hog and seems to have more toys than any human child should. When he gets bored of us he'll drag an assortment of stuffed animals and balls to an area and sit amongst them until we acknowledge that he wants to play. If it wasnt for the fact that my phone is always on me i would have missed the shot because if i moved to get my camera he'd jump up ready for a game! -Zac Wallace
