Shooting Challenge Fall Leaves Gallery 6
I was walking in the park with my girlfriend. Than she saw this scene and asked me to take a photo of it. I didn't want to, because it wasn't looking great from my point of view. My girlfriend than forced me to take that shot, and, after discovering that it is great, also forced me to buy her a chocolate "for the sense of art". -Alex Klochay
Shot in September near Aspen, CO. I was out visiting for a wedding. Nothing fancy with the equipment. This is 3 photos stitched together into 1 to form a wide panoramic shot of the country side. You can see the Aspen trees changing color in the hills behind. Was a beautiful fall day! -Andy Graber

"Pewit's Nest" near Baraboo, WI. This unique formation is surrounded by forests and cornfields. It would be easy to drive by about 300 yards away and never know it was there. The only way to get this perspective is to climb down on the ledges of this little canyon, no railing or safety net! It was after sunset, so I needed a long exposure to gather what little light was left. -Bill Robbins

I love taking fall pictures. Recently I was transferred to Mahwah NJ for work. I drive past this park every day. Once fall hit I knew I had to take some amazing fall pictures at this beautiful park. This was actually my last shot of the day. It was about 5pm and the sun was pretty bright before we had made our ascent to the peak so i wanted to go back for one last opportunity. You might be wondering where this place is and the answer is Virginia. My girlfriend and I were just in a wedding in Lynchburg and planned our trip so that we would have a day to see the sights. There is a small hotel/eatery at the base called the Peaks of Otter Lodge. It is a beautiful place with breathtaking views. This was where the photo was taken and it turned out to be my favorite photo of the trip. I am glad we went back before we left because the lighting was just right. I hope you enjoy the picture as much as we did taking it. -Cameron Hoch
My girlfriend and I were just in a wedding in Lynchburg Virginia and planned our trip so that we would have a day to see the sights. We had heard of the peaks of otter (where photos were taken) before and thought it would be a great place to check out. Living in SW Florida we don't have much of an opportunity to hike up any kind of elevation so it seemed like a great opportunity take on. The panorama shot was taken once we reached the top. The elevation was around 3,500 feet and it was worth every step, including my sore back from carrying a camera bag and tripod. The weather could not have been any better which made the experience more enjoyable. -Cameron Hoch

This was taken on the second morning of my fall color trip in Colorado. The lake calmed down just enough for a good reflection as the sun came up and painted the peaks of Maroon Bells bright red. -Chung Hu
After following a 7 miles long dirt road, I came upon this lake. Wind was strong, but after I took my time walking around the lakeshores, the lake calmed down. It was just another photographer, his border collie, and myself sharing this peaceful moment. -Chung Hu
It was taken on the Main Green at Brown University— We had an unseasonably warm day last week and everyone was hanging out outside, among the leaves. It was probably about 4 when this was taken, so the light turned out pretty cool in my opinion. I edited it for contrast and boosted the colors a bit in Lightroom, but that's it. -Clara Beyer
This is a shot of my 16 month old daughter Cecelia looking for her water bottle in her stroller during a late afternoon romp in the leaves with my wife and I. I chose the leaves in the upper left hand of the frame as the color to accent and snapped away. I think having her in the shot as a baby/toddler exploring all that is new in life to her and the falling/decaying leaves shows the interesting balance of life. -Colby Griggs

Hanging out with my family in Chicago and I wandered off towards the sunshine to get warm. While standing there huddled against the wind I looked up to see the sun streaming through the leaves. My coldness momentarily forgotten, I snapped a couple of pictures trying to capture the color of the leaves.
After becoming completely bored doing school I decided to head out and take some pictures. Just as I got out the door I noticed that it had been raining and that the leaves had water droplets covering them. About fifty pictures later and almost falling in a pond trying to get the right angle, this was the best one. -Dane Machiela
For this pictures, I was out shooting photos of Red things. It was the beginning of fall, so not many of the trees had changed colors yet. I passed by a barren tree and saw red leaves on the ground. i picked the most red ones up and piled them together. I switched to a nikon micro lens and shot the picture up close. Focused on the middle leaf. Did not think the other leaves would be unfocused, but I really enjoyed the effect after viewing the photo. -Daniel Jin
I picked up a decaying red leaf and shot it up close in my hand with the micro lens. The grass brought out the color of the leaf a lot. Being able to get so close to the leaf and seeing the texture of it made it look skin-like. -Daniel Jin

Today, me and my friend went for a walk/ jog in the park. It was an unusual day for fall, not like most days in the fall where one would expect the weather to be cool and brisk. It was quite the opposite today, the weather was warm and sunny like a day in Spring. The warm weather plus the wonderful smell of fall was in the air, which made our walk much more enjoyable than usual. Upon our walk in the park, I came across this area where the sun was shining through the autumn tinged trees , lighting up the path along the way. It was at this moment where i had to stop was i was doing, pull out my iphone 4 and snap a picture to remember this joyful sight.
This particular photo is the HDR version. The HDR version in particular reduced the glare from the sun and brought out more color in the leaves towards the top of the screen. -David Wagner

Normally I slip on these waxy bastards every morning, but today seemed to be the perfect balance of wetness, waxiness trapping the water, and colors. This picture was actually taken at the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory in South Burlington, VT. After we took the tour and housed some free ice cream, I took a few minutes to shoot the trees they had out by the parking lot, which were frankly the best I've seen this season. -Greg Carlson

Took a trip back home to Michigan for Thanksgiving - we really don't get this color in Atlanta, GA. Went out one fall afternoon to a park looking to capture some beauty. Came across this 'couple' on the bridge. No, I didn't position them there - nature did the framing for me! Taken on the campus of Michigan State University just before dusk on October 14. There was a beautiful maple tree in the courtyard between a few dorms that I wanted to take a picture of, but I wasn't satisfied with any of them because there was always a power line or dorm filled with windows or some other distracting object in the shot. So I moved in for a closer look and was delighted by the texture and color of the individual leaves, with the last bit of green summer clinging on for dear life. -James Seguin
Driving to campus this morning from St. Johns, MI, and the sky was beautiful. I thought this tree had a lot of character, especially without its leaves. The trees get a head start on losing their leaves here in Michigan, where it usually dips into the 20s well before winter begins. (It was 28 degrees this morning when the shot was taken!) -James Seguin
This is a stitched panorama of 6 portrait images taken on top of Talcott Mountain State Park, Farmington, Ct. As you can see this is an amazing vantage point that spans a view of the whole Farmington River Valley. The river is down there but well surrounded by trees which line both sides. -John Notar-Francesco
This image is a panorama made from 4 portrait images taken at Gillette State Castle Park in Hadlyme, Ct. The Park is a gem for colors and wildlife such as Blue Heron. The Castle (not pictured) was the home of famed portrayor Sherlock Holmes, William Gillette, and is a fantastic sight to visit in warmer months, closed now. The view of the connecticut river from that spot is also worth seeing but you only allowed 2 images. -John Notar-Francesco

I took this photo 2 weeks ago in the botanical garden in Innsbruck, Austria while it was raining. I set my camera on top of a large piece of cut stone that was about the size of a small car and had a wonderful wavy pattern cut into the top. I chose a shallow focus to give the viewer the sense of what it would look like if they were just another leaf sitting on the stone. It's ever-so-slightly off center and non-level to give the viewer that sense of landing randomly. Hope you like it. -Kevin Dawson
I was out running in a park near my office and came across this bridge. I thought it would make a nice background picture for my laptop so I pulled my iPhone 4 out of its arm band and took the snap with HDR on. I thought it turned out great for a mobile phone pic. -Kevin Trent
This was taken by my 3 year old daughter on my Nikon. I handed it to her and it's like she knew what she was doing when I handed her the camera. I was following her nervously because i didn't want her to drop it but she just kept on shooting. I really like this photo because when I plugged it into the computer I realized that it already fall. Man time fly by fast. So yeah I know this isn't anything flashy or eye catching but what I love so much so this picture is that I see what my daughter sees through her eyes. It simply amazes me that she took such a clear shot and that she knew how to use my camera as soon as i gave it to her, so there you have it! -Leo Leon
The day was very windy and the sun came out after several days of rain (it rains A LOT in Oslo, Norway). So, since the lens is not quite fast I had to compromise a bit. The idea was also to shoot red on red to create a sort of monochrome. -Mariano Iannuzzi
This one was taken in Flåm, one of the most spectacular places in Norway. There is absolutely no Photoshop on the reflection. The air was quite calm and I added a 0.9ND filter to make it a longer exposure. I liked to show the colors of the trees in the fiord, the serenity of the day, and the dry waterfalls. -Mariano Iannuzzi
"Autumnal Abstraction" I took this shot in mid-October, when this oak tree was showing beautiful reds and golds, while much of its foliage was still bright green. -Mark Reddick
I guess fall in Canada is coming to an end, but the seeing the first snow really made me want to go out and shoot. It just so happened that there was this set of leaves hanging down from a tree in my backyard that were now covered by white stuff, I upped the contrast and downed the saturation a bit to drop out the background. All the post is done in Canon's DPP, no cropping. -Martin Rodrigue
I first saw the shooting challenge and thought about shooting a tree, but I felt as if everybody else is going to do something similar... I came across a leaf in my front yard that looked something like this, and the shadow created an animal like shape. I placed it on my back porch table, and shot it where the lighting from the sun was perfect (it was around 4pm). I really thought the color of the table went well with the leaf itself, resembling fall perfectly in its calmness. I used auto exposure bracketing and set the three shots apart by 2.0. Later I ran it through Photomatix Pro for the HDR and photoshop for touch-ups. -Masaki Norton
